IP / USB Video Camera Solutions
Consumers may now easily add features such as Skype video calling to their HDTVs by using a Skype-enabled TV camera that simply plugs into the HDMI port of the HDTV. These TV cameras capture and encode (compress) the audio and video to send it to the other person using the home network to access the Internet. They also receive compressed audio and video from the other person, decode it, and drive the HDTV using HDMI.
Alternately, consumers may use a USB TV camera. These USB TV cameras capture and encode (compress) the audio and video to send it via USB to a Skype-enabled HDTV, set-top box, or media player, which then sends it to the other person using the home network to access the Internet. Receiving, decoding, and displaying the audio and video from the other person is done by the HDTV, set-top box, or media player.
Small IP video cameras that interface to the home network also becoming popular, enabling consumers to monitor their homes using the Internet. Businesses also use IP video cameras to monitor their buildings. These IP video cameras capture and encode (compression) the audio and video to send it over the network for viewing and storage.
